Set during the late 20th century, The Sound of Birds You Don’t Expect concerns Eve, a rebellious American teen, who’s suspended from boarding school for breaking into a synagogue. Because Eve’s distant parents are unable to take her in, she’s sent to North Carolina stay with her grandmother, Suzanne, a German-Jewish Holocaust refugee.

The play is a serious comedy about how these two bright, eccentric women challenge each other’s politics, life choices and family memories, and, ultimately, help each other see their identities in new ways.
